It’s been a little over a year since Purrrlandia chose Thousand Oaks as their home. In that time, they’ve given locals a wide range of drinks to choose from, a unique place to spend time, and the opportunity to help cats and kittens find their forever home.
At the heart of it all is Founder and CEO Kat Killoran’s love for cats, which inspired a space where each cat can feel comfortable enough to let their personality shine through.
Unlike a shelter, which can often be overcrowded, this cat cafe made the choice to create a space where cats can freely roam and interact with both other cats and people. It gives potential adopters the chance to see each cat’s personality in a way that isn’t always possible in a traditional shelter environment. Purrrlandia wasn’t something Kat had planned. After a career in corporate HR, her volunteer work with rescue animals and a visit to a cat café in Japan sparked an idea for a completely different path: creating a space that feels more like home for cats, where they can live, play, decompress, and let their personalities come through while waiting to be adopted.
Walking into Purrrlandia doesn’t mean you have to leave with a feline companion. The space is designed so you can simply stop in for a cup of coffee without entering the cat lounge, which is especially helpful for coffee lovers with allergies. And for those who love cats but can’t have one at home, the designated lounge offers a chance to spend time with them without the commitment of bringing one home.
Purrrlandia Cat Lounge & Café has quickly become a new staple in Thousand Oaks, and to think, we almost missed out on having it here. Kat’s search originally began in the San Fernando Valley, but finding the right space proved to be a challenge. Eventually, that search expanded into the Conejo Valley, where Thousand Oaks quickly stood out. The sense of community, the environment, and the city’s willingness to welcome a concept that didn’t quite fit into a traditional business category made it feel like the right place to call home.
What started as a search somewhere else ultimately brought Purrrlandia to Thousand Oaks, giving our community something a little different and, more importantly, giving cats in need a place to feel at home while they wait for their forever home.
As a fellow cat and coffee lover, it’s probably no surprise that I’ve become a regular here. After learning Kat volunteered with rescue animals and partners with Best Friends Animal Society, supporting the cafe became an easy choice. Cats have always held a special place for me. During my time with LA Animal Services and the SMART team, I had my fair share of rescues involving cats that found themselves in some pretty unusual predicaments.
Whether you’re looking to adopt, enjoy a cup of coffee, or simply unwind in the company of a feline friend, every visit helps support Purrrlandia’s vision of creating a welcoming environment where cats can thrive while waiting to find their forever home.
